The popular antivirus software Avira Antivir has been updated and it now offered on the developer’s homepage for download. Avira Antivir 10 Personal is provided in several editions including a free edition with limited functionality.
Antivir 10 Free, often also called Antivir 10 Personal, includes the antivirus, anti-malware, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit modules but lacks features like anti-spam, backup or a firewall which are only available in Antivir 10 Premium or the Avira Security Suite.
The installation of the antivirus software is straightforward. It takes only a few clicks to install the program. A custom installation option is provided to block the installation of some components, specifically the Antivir Guard, AntiVir rootkit detection and the shell extension. Blocking the first two only makes sense if another security software protects the computer system from those threats.
Avira Antivir 10 displays a configuration wizard on first start. Inexperienced users might be best of to leave everything at the default settings while advanced users can configure the detection level of the AHeaD heuristics module, the types of threats that Avira Antivir Personal should detect (adware, dialers, games, fraudulent software, backdoor clients and more) and the startup type of the software.

Avira 10 still displays advertisement popups to the user (take a look at How to disable the ad popup in AntiVir to disable the popup).

The program will perform a quick scan after installation that checks the most important file locations and processes. It is recommended to perform a complete system scan afterwards.
The interface has been redesigned and all available options can be reached with just a few clicks. Avira AntiVir Personal displays three menus on the left sidebar, an overview that displays the current protection status, events and reports, local protection that can be used to perform scans or administration that provides access to the quarantine and scheduler.
All of the options are also accessible from the top menu. It is to early to judge the effectiveness of the program but initial tests by AV-Tests “detected an excellent 98.6% of malware and achieved a “high level” of rootkit detection”.
Avira Antivir 10 now supports cloud based detection of threats, a concept that is becoming increasingly popular with security software developers. The antivirus software introduces a generic repair feature “for damage that may be caused by new variants of viruses and malware”.
Avira Antivir Personal can be downloaded from the developer’s website. It has a size of 40 Megabytes and compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Alcohol 120% DVD burning software is an easy to use program – the strength in which lies in its massive virtual drive capability: this program will create up to 31 images and virtual CD and DVD drives. It’s the perfect utility for copying DVDs via image files.
The installation and setup is simple. Alcohol does now support Windows Vista.

Features:

Alcohol 120% features all the elements needed to produce a copy of a high-quality DVD. Unfortunately Alcohol is missing several key features and custom options offered by many of the top-ranked products reviewed here. For example, the program has no preview feature for regular data burning. Alcohol would have rated higher with the inclusion of this and some other missing functions (missing when compared next to the other products we reviewed).

Copying Capabilities:

Alcohol will mount disc images and create virtual drives. We successfully copied DVD-to-image onto our hard drive then made a DVD disc copy from the hard drive. We were also able to use MP3 files, WAV files and ISO (image) files in creating DVD copies. However, the options for creating the copy don’t go beyond selecting a source and destination.

Other Features:

Drag and drop is used for this interface. We were able to create ID3 tags for the music CD we imported (just out of curiosity). The only other notable feature here is the ability to erase rewritable discs. Burning speed selection is one other option you can make before beginning the process.

Disc Types:

Alcohol supports only the use of CD-R(W), CD+R(W), DVD-R(W) and DVD+(W).

Help/Support:

Alcohol 120% DVD burning software does offer a user manual and email support, as well as forums and FAQs, though the information was unwieldy and difficult to sort through.

Supported Configurations:

You can run Alcohol on Windows 2000, XP or Vista.

Summary:

Overall, Alcohol is a fair DVD burning product which produces a quality finished copy. If you desire to burn only DVDs via image files and not data discs, this product is an okay choice.

How to convert video from one format to another.

1.	In the RealPlayer Library, move the cursor over the file you wish to convert. In the dropdown menu select “Convert to.”
2.	A new window called “RealPlayer Converter” will open. In this window, click on the big silver button below the text “Convert to.”
3.	In the “Select a Device” window, click on the drop-down menu at the top and select “Video Formats.”
4.	Next, select the format you want to convert your original file to and click OK.
5.	Finally, click the green “Start” button to begin your video format conversion. When the conversion is complete, the newly formatted video will appear in in your RealPlayer Library, along with your original file.
